At Volleman’s, caring for our cows starts with how we feed them! Every decision we make is centered around keeping our herd healthy, comfortable, and well-nourished year-round.
Our cows are not 100% grass fed, and there is a reason for that! In most parts of the world, including Texas, it’s not realistic to keep cows on pasture all-year long. Weather conditions like extreme heat, drought, heavy rain, and cold can all impact the availability and quality of fresh grass. With Texas experiencing ongoing drought conditions, it’s especially important that we plan ahead to ensure our cows always have access to consistent nutrition.
To do that, we feed a balanced diet that includes corn and grass silage, along with sorghum silage and alfalfa hay. This combination provides the nutrients our cows need to stay healthy and continue producing high-quality milk.
Silage plays a key role in our feeding program. It’s made by chopping the entire plant and storing it in an airtight environment, similar to canning. This process locks in nutrients at their peak and allows us to store feed for use throughout the year.
By growing and preparing our own feed, we are able to support our cows through every season, even during challenging weather conditions. It’s all part of our commitment to caring for our animals and producing milk you can feel good about.
